By The Way: A short Story (kind of)

Dear Martin—

I’m writing you this letter because there’s something I need to tell you.  I should have told you years ago, but I was too scared. I was terrified, but I’ve decided I don’t care anymore what people say, or what people think.

So I’m writing you this letter to tell you how I feel about you.  I can’t help but notice the way you treat people—you are so, so kind.  And funny. Really, truly funny. You always make me laugh. And you haven’t noticed (that I’m in love with you).  ‘Cause you are blind as heck, by the way. And wise—wiser than me, wiser than our twenty-five years. I could listen to you for hours.  You probably never noticed the way I look at you. You are so oblivious, but somehow you are also conscientious?

Which, by the way, is why I’m burning this as soon as I finish it.  Why you can’t actually read it.

Because I don’t care what people think, but you still do.  If you read this, it would make you miserable. I know you well enough to know that, and I still love you enough to burn this stupid letter.

She’s lovely, by the way.  I hope you make her happy.

And I think I’m wiser, and kinder, and funnier, because of you.  So thanks for everything.

Sincerely yours (always yours),

-Juliet

  1. That’s such a sad story, Hanna! It’s very cleverly done. I enjoyed it. 🙂 Keep messing around with words, Hanna! And I think that a letter would be a neat way to start my novel. I’ll have to try it out. Fare well!

    1. Thank you, Brianna! I love letters in stories. You mean Gavin’s story, right? There’s so many different characters and different relationships in that one! You could do something really cool with a letter.

  2. Sincerely yours- Always yours,
    Juliet

    *cue the broken hearts*
    This is amazing, Hanna. <333

When there's something someone believes in, like you and your writing, and you want to share it with the world and not keep to yourself is really, really great. Because I know writers have that problem where their stories are their "babies" and they don't want to share them with the world sometimes- but if they DO, maybe that would change someone's life. Dumping your feelings on a page and sharing it with the world has got to be hard, because I know your writing comes from your heart, and message you want to get sent across. And sometimes that kind of stuff can be personal and hard to share.
But you've GOT IT, blondey, elf-friend, Groot- Love you!!
Go out there and change the world with your writing.

(And I realized what I commented yesterday wasn't enough, so here I am again. <3)

    1. Aw, girl. Thanks for commenting–both times! You’re too sweet. ♥️
I’m honored that it broke your heart. #authors ?
Letting other people see my writing can be scary, but it’s always been worth it. Thanks for your own words of encouragement to me!
      Love you, Scott. ??

  3. *lots of hearts and hugs and TEA*
I know it can be scary!! You’re brave!! Keep on going, and I can’t wait to tell people that I know you when you’re majorly famous, LOL <3 Love you too, Groot

  4. Suppose Juliet wrote this letter before “she” came along and failed to deliver it. Now it’s too late. What does she do now? Forty years ago I wrote such a letter. Why it was undelivered is complicated. It remains buried in a box somewhere in my attic. Two years after I wrote that letter I met my wife. There’s a song on YouTube that hits me hard. it’s called “Timing is Everything”, sung by Garrett Hedlund. “You can be hurt by love or healed by the same. Timing is everything.”

  5. Hanna, I’ll have to agree with Ellen.

    WOW.

It’s amazing what depth of emotion you manage to sneak into just a few words. *sniffs* (I may or may not be crying over in my corner of the writing world.) This is so inspiring.
Keep writing! You’re so talented, my friend.
