I think I usually post like everyday when I do science stories, in which case it’s high time I posted Part 2! 🙂

Katie ran her comb through Mandy’s silky blond hair, the wet locks spattering a gentle mist behind it. Katie stood up and patted her sister’s shoulder. “Done.

“Alright, girls, get your shoes on then and let’s go get something to eat,” Dad answered.

Mandy hurried to the door at once, while Katie ran to put the comb away in the bathroom. Brian, whose hair required a little less time to be gotten presentable, stood already in his sandals, with the air of having done his good deed for the day. Katie slid into her flip-flops and grabbed her purse—she didn’t really need it, it wasn’t like she was buying lunch or anything, but she liked to have it with her.

“Everybody ready?” Mom asked, as Mandy Velcro-ed her sandals and stood up.

A chorus of yes‘s followed, and the five of them headed for the car.

“Katie?”

Hearing Mandy call her name, Katie turned from the palm trees out the window. “Yeah?”

“Someone interrupted our conversation. Tell me about the kingdoms.”

“Oh, yes. So you know what is considered a living thing, right?”

“Mmm-hmm.”

“Well, scientists classify all life in five kingdoms: Kingdom Monera (muh nihr’ uh), Kingdom Protista (pruh tist’ uh), Kingdom Fungi (fun’ jye), Kingdom Plantae, and Animalia.”

“Those are long names.”

“Well, yes, I guess so.”

“What’s in them? Animals in An. . .”

“Animalia?”

“Right.”

“And plants in the plant one; and kelp in Protista. What’s in the other ones?”

“Well, Fungi contains mushrooms and other fungus—like mold. Monera and Protista contain mostly microscopic creatures.”

“Kelp isn’t microscopic,” said Mandy, with a wise look.

“Kelp isn’t the only thing Kingdom Protista!” answered Katie, a bit irritated. “I said mostly.”

“Okay, mostly then,” Mandy was obviously not very concerned about winning the argument. “But why have two Kingdoms for microscopic things? Why not merge Protista and. . . and whatever that other one was?”

“Because—“ Katie began, then realized that they were just pulling into parking-spot. “I’ll tell you later.”

P.S. I just found a few verses when I was reading my Bible this morning, and (knowing that several horse-lovers read my blog) I knew I needed to share them! 🙂

“Do you give the horse his strength or clothe his neck with a flowing mane?  Do you make him leap like a locust, striking terror with his proud snorting?  He paws fiercely, rejoicing in his strength, and charges into the fray.  He laughs at fear, afraid of nothing; he does not shy away from the sword.  The quiver rattles against his side, along with the flashing spear and lance.  In frenzied excitement he eats up the ground; he cannot stand still when the trumpet sounds.”  -Job 3919-25

You find the neatest (and strangest) things when you just read the Bible.  I’m reading through the whole Bible for the second time, and I didn’t notice those verses the first time.  I figured out recently that I could almost recite my favorite novels to people, so I decided I wanted to know the Bible like that.  Obviously it’s longer, but I decided to just read it over and over and over–even Leviticus.  I just realized (again) recently what a cool book the Bible really is! 🙂  I can truthfully say it’s my favorite.

And I don’t mean to be discouraging if you sometimes find the Bible a bit dull.  Because I do too sometimes, and some of it’s hard reading.  But just keep reading it.  The more you read, the more I you like, I think.
